No Academy Award For Italy This Year? Blame The Mafia

Hey Mafia - you couldn't have let Gomorrah win the Oscar?

Italian film critic Giorgio Carbone (from the online “Libero”)  has an interesting theory about why Emanuele Crialese’s Terraferma was not nominated for an Oscar – it’s the Mafia’s fault, and Billy Crystal told him so.

Crystal gave him the scoop – the film Mediterraneo won, and Gomorrah lost; the Italian-American Mafia wanted it that way. He wrote: Overlooking Gomorrah was an injustice” and that Billy Crystal had said that “Behind every Italian victory there is the hand of the Mafia”.

Yes, it’s a shame that Terraferma was left off the list – it’s a wonderful movie and yes, I’d love to blame somebody.

Who wants to break it to Carbone that Billy Crystal is a comedian?
