Francesco Melzi d’Eril, the movie’s producer, tells us how he heard about it.
“I got the news yesterday afternoon when the announcements were made. Darren Aronofsky’s agent texted me to congratulate me”.
How is the movie going in the States?
“The film went very well, it made more than 5 million dollars at the box office, which for an Italian movie represent an exceptional goal. I think it’s the second or third foreign movie in the charts”.
What is the secret of this international success?
“The directing abilities of Luca, the quality of the movie in general, starting from the cinematography, wonderful, to the costumes. Tilda Swinton is, of course, an icon everywhere. And an idea of Italy that the audience was waiting to see at the movies”.
As a citizen of Milan, a comment on this vision of the city?
“There are scenes of Milan like you’ve never seen it before, with snow, for example. It had been a while since it was portrayed this way in a film. Regarding the social fabric, many upper class people from Milan have criticized it, because they don’t recognize themselves in that family. But I don’t think that it’s the archetype of a Milan family: it’s a Milan family invented by Luca Guadagnino. It doesn’t have to represent at all costs a certain way of being from Milan. It’s just likely”.
Fashion is very present in this movie…
“Luca has worked with Antonella Cannarozzi who is the costume designer for the movie and she has done a very intense work with Jil Sander. Luca has always been very interested in fashion, he has collaborated often with that world. And it must also be said that one of the co-producers of the movie is Silvia Venturini Fendi, a dear friend of Luca”.
