We spell it with the “h”, Gomorrah, and Italy spells it without, Gomorra, but either way, no Italian movie list would be complete without a mafia movie. If you didn’t already know, there’s more than one mafia in Italy and Americans have always focused on the Sicilian one. The Camorra is the one that headquarters in Naples and it is giving the Cosa Nostra a run for its money. The Camorra has killed more people than any other organized crime group. They sell more drugs than any other, and have invested their gains in legitimate businesses all over the world, including the reconstruction of the twin towers.
Matteo Garrone’s 2008 movie Gomorra (a play on the word “gomorrah”) is based on a book written by Roberto Saviano, who had to go into hiding after writing it and still lives with bodyguards. It’s an extremely well told story of the businessmen who prosper, the thugs who manuever unchecked, the young people without options, the mothers and the children who try to live normal lives, and the old people who just want to live in the constant shadow of organized crime. In everyday life, and particularly for poor people, the Camorra is not only the reality but the law.
