Why can’t I find the most recent Italian movies in the United States? and…
Why are there movies I have never been able to find in the United States?
If you find my Ultimate Guide To Streaming to be limited, and say, “Surely there are a lot more contemporary Italian movies you can stream”, the answer is “NO, there aren’t.” For a movie to be available in the United States, there has to have been a distribution deal (don’t ask me how this works because it makes my head hurt when people try to explain it to me). If the film has not been distributed here, you won’t find it unless you do some kind of illegally uploaded version, which I can’t condone. Film piracy is stealing.
And yet, it seems stupid, in this day and age, that we are standing here, money in hand, begging to pay to see a movie and finding no legal way to do it. For the time being, that’s the way it is.
So how are you finding these movies?
Sometimes I am lucky to get screeners from distributors, and a lot of times I see the premieres at film festivals, but if those options aren’t possible, I order DVDs from Italy. You can find lots of films on Amazon, but I use a website called ibs.it,
Can I do that too?
Absolutely, but it’s very important to know that these films are PAL Zone 2, and can’t be played on DVD players in the USA (it has to do with the distribution agreements). If you want to buy these DVDs, you’ll have to get a region free or Italian DVD player. They are very affordable; mine cost about $40 and I bought it on Amazon.
I’m looking for a movie from the 1980s about a man and his hot wife who decide they want to try a threesome to spice up their marriage and then everyone gets murdered. Can you help me find it?
I seriously doubt it. This is SO not my era or my genre, and when people ask me this question I usually refer them to my friend Nigel at Italian Film Review. He LOVES that stuff.
Why don’t you write about the Neorealist films? Aren’t you leaving a lot of good ones out?
Because, 1) I don’t want to, that’s not my deal, and I prefer the new ones and 2) yes, but I don’t care.
If you want to read about De Sica and Rossellini, there are thousands of other websites at your service, but I am all about what is happening now, and that is some pretty exciting stuff.
